When Liu Chuan's ancestors moved to Shiwan, it was the heyday of ceramic industry in Shiwan, so his family had been engaging in ceramic art works for four generations. Liu Chuan, since 10 years old, he was fascinated with the ancient stories, Guangdong opera and children readings. He was influenced by the folk arts in times of his living. In 1928, Liu Chuan began to work as an apprentice in a curio shop. Later he joined Chenqiji as a long-term assistant, where he experienced suffering hardwork in learning and engaging further elaboration of Shiwan cereamic crafts techniques of clay refining, clay matching and burning glaze. He tried hard to learn from his senior master Pan Yushu with the method of “learning skills by spying". He studied the works from various masters and was creative and innovative. Since 15 years old, he tried to develop and create his own art works. He then developed his unrestrained and bold artistic style by creating one of his art works "Zhang Fei" which made him famous in Shiwan artistic circle. At that time he was only in his eighteen. Liu Chuan, his achievements are worthy of highest praise and award as most of his art works of ceramic figurines are collected by the National and Arts & Crafts Museums of China and many other Countries, especially one of his art works "Luohan" achieved the highest kudos in London World Art Exhibition.
